What to consider when renovating bathrooms in commercial properties

As a business or commercial property owner, you are responsible for ensuring that workers and customers have access to clean facilities — especially the bathroom. Whether you opt for something basic and cost-saving or something more luxurious, there are certain conditions your commercial bathrooms need to meet.

Safe Work Australia offers the following guidelines:

  • On the number of toilets — Commercial properties with ten or fewer people in the building at any given time can opt for unisex bathrooms. However, for other establishments, you will need one closet pan for every ten males and one urinal for every 25 males. You will also need one closet pan for every 15 females.
  • On shower facilities — You must provide at least one shower cubicle for every ten workers, along with separate shower areas for male and female employees. The stall should be no less than 1.8 square metres and the flooring should be slip-resistant.
  • On handwashing basins — These help businesses involved in food handling or medical facilities, for example, adhere to strict sanitation codes. They recommend one basin for every 30 male workers and one for every 30 female workers.

In addition to these guidelines, we can also help build PWD-friendly facilities so everyone visiting or working in your establishment will feel welcome.

What comes first in a commercial bathroom renovation?

It all begins with a consultation. If you have an idea ready, iron out the details of your renovation with us so we can get on the same page. Then, we’ll conduct an initial site visit to see the space for ourselves to determine how to proceed from there.

What are the benefits of renovating a commercial bathroom?

There are quite a few benefits to maintaining a well-designed and constructed bathroom.

  • Promotes a healthy workspace — Makes your bathroom easier to clean and maintain to promote a healthy working environment and prevent the spread of diseases.
  • Improves your brand image — An outdated bathroom can give off negative vibes to your customers. Elevate the customer experience by upgrading your commercial property with a modern design.
  • Increases property value — Something as simple as keeping your facilities clean can increase property value. But adding more aesthetic elements could potentially attract more investors or buyers.

Which tiles are best to use in commercial bathrooms?

Porcelain tiles are highly recommended for commercial property use. They are durable, easy to clean and come in several patterns and designs, so you’re sure to find something that suits your decor.

What fixtures or equipment are needed in commercial bathrooms?

Generally, the fixtures you need in a restroom are the same as residential bathrooms. The only difference is that you need them to be stronger and more durable since commercial bathrooms serve more people.

You would also need to include additional items like partitions and toilet stalls for privacy, diaper-changing tables and handicap-accessible equipment to accommodate the needs of different people.
